I've gotten myself into a Gothic funk the past couple of reads. I'm thinking this is the next big trend in Young Adult literature. The Madman's Daughter, by Megan Shepard, follows the classic by H.G. Wells, The Island of Doctor Moreau. It chronicles the daughter of Dr. Moreau after he has been exiled to his island. She is penniless and working at a medical university where she is forced to endure a harder life with filled with more nightmares than even her father's laboratory could provide. Like always, I am still at the beginning of this trilogy. I added it to this blog because I can already tell it is going to be a good one. The imagery in incredibly memorable. Like most Gothic novels it begins early with stronf imager of blood, death, and sadness. It is our job as the reader to find this beauty in that darkness.
