Meet the Boys from Dincan's Park

Dreaming up characters is the best part about writing for me.  Its so much fun to inocorporate the sheer vitality and even horrible flaws into a lifeless sheet of paper- and they come alive!  It has been so much fun to write this children's story because everything I see, hear, and am irritated by in my own children goes into the two boys in my new story, Dincan's Park.

We had a slumber party of seven boys for Hayden's 9th Unbirthday party (yes, I know...he is a middle child, so only middle children and mothers will understand that one).  I watched the way the boys talked with their mouths full, scratched themselves, hollered and jumped off of tree limbs.  It was tiring but enlightening.  Boys are gross and nuts, and I needed to capture this same essence when creating Luke and Buddy the two boys from my latest story.

Luke is a 5th grader growing up with an eccentric mother and little sister. He isn't the brightest,  or the fastest, or the coolest kid in school. In fact people didn't pay too much attention to him-
until he accidentally set fire to his kitchen in fourth grade.  Luke secretly wants to take Karate classes, but his mother thinks it's too violent and he'll get hurt.  Luke's biggest fear at the beginning of his last year of elementary school is that his babysitter, Bree, will discover his secret crush on her.

Buddy is Luke's life-long best freind. His real name is Ernest, but he made everyone call him Buddy after he wore his Toy Story pajamas to school for an entire year. To his amazement, the name stuck. Buddy is a skimny, goofy, loud, and loyal boy who isn't afraid of anything.

Theres baseball, chocolate, and hidden gravestones in their future.  Together the boys have to save their small town from becoming "Vegified" zombies.

The boys and the rest of the book is coming soon!

As a frustrated writer, I can relate so much on you because coming up with the characters for your piece is quite challenging yet fun! There's a self pressure you put because you want to find the best characters who can give life to your story and it is quite complicated. There is also a need for you to be consistent. Everything about writing is hard, actually. But if this is really your passion, you need to endure and love the bits and pieces of all these things!

It doesn't get any more real than this! Like all my social media indicates I am an English teacher at Reagan High School.  I love my students as much as I do my own four children.  I enjoy YA Lit and Cadbury eggs.  I spend most of my daylight hours in overdrive, like most mothers.  Many ask me how I manage to accomplish so much, and although I have answered in various ways, the one solid truth in my life is Jesus Christ who makes all things possible.
Borrego is the name of my current project. Check out this novel and more on my website or on Amazon.com.
